Madagascar represents less than 0.5% of the land mass but 5% of its biodiversity
The high degree of biodiversity and endemism of the flora and fauna of Madagascar are one of the leading global centers of attraction for natural resource conservation. Almost all groups of flora and fauna of the island country has a level of endemism that with the number of species observed and the reduced size of the island makes it a country of mega diversity. The balance of the island of environment is yet very fragile. Indeed, the extent of degradation is considerable and threatens global biodiversity. Facing the impoverishment of the population and the degradation of natural ecosystems, efficient and sustainable conservation measures were necessary.
Aware of the challenges, the Malagasy Government pledged at the World Summit in Durban in 2003 to triple the size of the Protected Areas of Madagascar in 5 years and then pursues its objective.
