The goal is to turn Rodrigues into an ecological island while promoting better waste management
Rodrigues continues to widen its lead over Mauritius in sustainable development. After plastic bags’ ban implementation in 2014, the Regional Assembly introduces its measures on Returnable Container Deposit Refund Regulations 2015.
According to a recent study, plastic bottles represent 11% of the island’s waste and 500 000 of these products are imported each year in Rodrigues.
The first bin for waste sorting has been in operation with the aims to educate and raise awareness about the importance of managing and sorting the waste. Indeed, the sorting of waste saves natural resources and reducing landfill and incineration.
Made entirely from recycled plastic, this garbage is designed to accommodate waste such as plastic bottles, glass bottles and aluminum cans.
Similar bins will be placed in villages by 2016 to allow overall waste management across the island. The Environmental Commission plans to conduct an education campaign within families to learn how to sort household waste while developing environmental awareness of every citizen. Buying a grinder to reduce plastics for recycling is also planned.
