The Seychelles aspire to be one of the ecological capital cities of the world by 2020
In 2011, the President of Seychelles, James Michel, announced the government’s wish to propel by 2020 The Seychelles on the ranks of the ecological world capital cities and La Digue as ecological capital city of the Seychelles. Since then, various initiatives have been undertaken to change the island of 2900 inhabitants in a sustainable way, including the introduction of clean energy vehicles.
Encouraging students to take a more ecological approach in all aspects of school life
Since 2014, the school of La Digue, the third largest inhabited island of the archipelago which counts nearly 2,900 people, has received help from various partners that include both government agencies as nongovernmental organizations. A first grid connected photovoltaic panel has been erected on one of the school buildings, a rain water recovery system used in the toilet was installed, the waste sorting works and a project of planting more trees in the grounds of the school is underway. The sustainable movement spread to neighbouring islands like Cousin, Aride and Aldabra Atoll that become autonomous thanks to solar energy.
