There were 700 Ouvea Nynphiques left in 2000
It is listed in Appendix 1 of the Washington Convention and declared a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The Nynphique Ouvea (Cyanoramphus saisseti) is an endemic parakeet of Ouvea that lives in the northern forests of the island.
Its population was estimated at 700 individuals in the last census in late 2000. This birds’ species has long been considered as a subspecies of the Red-fronted Kakariki or parakeet of Sparrman.
An association for safeguarding the Ouvea parakeet was created in 1993.It brings together the inhabitants of the island, traditional authorities and scientists who organize awareness and information campaigns in Ouvea by spreading the message of the need to protect this bird.
