Erosion appears to be the dominant process that affects linear study sites on the Mainland
The OBLIC Committee (Observatory coast of New Caledonia) has identified several points of interest (in Southern Province, Islands Province and Northern Province) which pose problems of erosion and flooding. In 2013 and 2014, visits to pilot sites have identified several issues: mobility of coral islands, erosion and decline of the coastline on the major islands and the Mainland and flooding hazards (Hydrometeorological and tsunami).
The report concludes that more than half of the total length of the coastline coastal pilot sites is affected by erosion. Some are relatively stable over time, while others are changing very fast with such a rapid decline of the coastline or decline phases alternations and advanced. The percentages of shorelines currently affected by erosion, accretion or stability are highly variable from one site to another.
However, at present, 56% of the total length of the coastline of the sites are affected by erosion. Some sites have a very significant percentage of coastline eroding (91.5% to Karikaté example). 27% of the coastlines of the sites are stable or almost stable while only 17% show a significant linear trend of accretion.
