Equipped with a generator peripheral, the OpenHydro tidal turbine supplies power to nearly 1,500 homes
The hyrdolienne is 40 meters deep on a base of 900 tonnes in order to withstand sea currents that flow through this dreaded zone for all boaters.
A second tidal turbine of the same size will join in a few weeks the first, which will make the site Bréhat “the first experimental tidal turbine in the world,” said Pierre-Guy Thérond, Director at EDF Energies Nouvelles. These two machines will produce 1 megawatt (MW) of electricity, equivalent to the energy supply 1,500 homes.Started in 2008, this project amounts up to € 40 million, including 6.6 million euros in state aid. The farm will be connected to the grid before the summer thanks to a submarine converter created and set up by General Electric.
With an axial generator, Hydroelectric D10 Sabella should ensure 50% of electricity needs in Ouessant
If it is a smaller size, the company quimpéroise Sabella also focuse on this technology. Sabella created the first machine that works for months off the island of Ouessant, in the strong current of Fromveur area. Called “D10”, it supplies electricity to the island. “A pilot farm project is announced by the government in this area. It should be composed of two or three machines to ensure 50% of the island’s electricity needs, “says Jean-François Daviau, President of Sabella. It uses a different system from DCNS and OpenHydro. Its generator is when the axial DCNS and OpenHydro is peripheral.
