A unique ecosystem without any sign of human impacts and exceptional 90% levels of endemism!
The new fully protected Nazca-Desventuradas marine area covers 300 000 square kilometers where fishing and any other extractive activities are prohibited.
Chile will thus be able to protect 12% of its marine area, which represents an increase of 4.4%.
National Geographic and Oceana are behind the proposal to establish this marine park. An expedition was launched in February 2013, led by a renowned national and international scientists team that explored for the first time and with advanced technology, one of the most pristine and wild places of South America .

Scientists have discovered a unique ecosystem with no sign of human impact and with an exceptional 90% level of endemic species.
The site stands out also by the abundance of seaweed forests and teeming populations of predatory fish such as large tuna, yellowtail amberjack and other deep-water sharks, not to mention fragile deep-sea corals. Large lobsters – individuals spanning more than one meter and weighing up to 8 kilos! – were observed, an indicator of the exceptional health of these preserved ecosystems.
