Ocean acidification: a silent threatening phenomenon
It is in 2013 that the director of “Island Scallops” Rob Saunders, found out the first effects of climate change. Ocean acidification has had a dramatic result: three million of shells lost in adulthood. Rob Saunders, considered as the specialist in this shell exported all around the world, the losses amounted to seven million euros.
The oceans play a major role: they absorb 30% of the carbon generated by human activities, but also 90% of the heat generated by fossil fuels. But they have limitations.
As CO2 is increasing much faster than the forecasts, producers felt the need to adapt by focusing on the reproduction of the most resistant species.
Ocean acidification is a silent phenomenon threatening; it has already happened 55 million years ago eliminating several species in the oceans.
